Constipation Awareness Month December 2023

Constipation: Constipation is a common digestive issue where a person has difficulty passing stools regularly. It can lead to infrequent bowel movements, hard and dry stools, and a feeling of incomplete evacuation.

Causes:

  1. Dietary Factors: Not consuming enough fiber from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

  2. Dehydration: Inadequate water intake can contribute to hard stools.

  3. Lack of Physical Activity: A sedentary lifestyle may affect bowel movements.

  4. Ignoring the Urge: Ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement can lead to constipation.

  5. Certain Medications: Some medications can cause constipation as a side effect.

Control:

  1. Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep stools soft.

  2. Fiber-Rich Diet: Include more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your diet.

  3. Regular Exercise: Engage in physical activity to stimulate bowel movements.

  4. Establish a Routine: Set aside time for a bowel movement, preferably after meals.

  5. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to your body's signals and respond to the urge to go.

Remedy Naturally:

  1. Prunes or Prune Juice: Prunes contain fiber and a natural laxative called sorbitol.

  2. Fiber Supplements: Psyllium husk or flaxseeds can be added to your diet to increase fiber intake.

  3. Warm Water with Lemon: A glass of warm water with lemon in the morning can help stimulate bowel movements.

  4. Probiotics: Foods like yogurt with live cultures or probiotic supplements can promote gut health.
