International Condom day 13 th Feb 2024

The theme for International Condom Day 2024 could be "Empower, Protect, Connect: Embracing Safe Choices Worldwide." This theme emphasizes empowerment through informed choices, protection through responsible behavior, and the global connection in promoting safe practices.

According to National today:

International Condom Day is celebrated on February 13 every year, one day before Valentine’s Day. The day is a fun, tongue-in-cheek way of reminding people to practice safety when being intimate with their partners. The day was set up as a way to remind people that condoms are one of the best ways to protect themselves not only from unwanted pregnancies but Sexually Transmitted Diseases (S.T.D.s) as well. There are variations of the condom so that they can be used by everyone regardless of their gender. Proper usage reduces the risk of diseases like gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV/AIDS, among others.

Key facts from WHO

  • Condoms have had a significant impact on the global AIDS pandemic: model simulations show that increased condom use since 1990 has averted an estimated 117 million new HIV infections (1).

  • In 2020, 374 million new STI infections occurred globally among adults aged 15–49 with 1 of the 4 curable STIs: syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhoea and trichomoniasis. The majority of these could be prevented with the correct use of condoms.

  • Ninety-eight percent of women whose male partners use male condoms correctly in every sex act over one year will be protected from unplanned pregnancy; when female condoms are used, 95% of them will be protected against unplanned pregnancy.

  • Research from WHO, HRP and partners from February 2022 indicates that interventions that use a positive language about sex, including sexual pleasure, are effective in increasing condom use.

  • Non-judgmental, person-centred information should be provided to support condom use.

  • Gender inequities, especially in intimate relationships is a major barrier for condom use and should be addressed.International Condom Day is celebrated to raise awareness about the importance of using condoms in preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies. It also aims to promote safer sexual practices and encourage open discussions about sexual health.

Correct directions to use condom

"Using a condom is a simple yet crucial step towards ensuring safe and responsible sexual practices. Start by carefully opening the packaging to avoid damaging the condom. Check the expiration date to ensure its effectiveness. Place the rolled condom over the tip of the erect penis, leaving a small space at the top for semen collection.

Gently squeeze the air out of the tip to create a reservoir for semen. Unroll the condom down the entire length of the penis, ensuring a snug fit but leaving some space at the tip. During intercourse, make sure the condom stays in place and doesn't slip off.

After ejaculation, hold the base of the condom as you withdraw to prevent any spillage. Dispose of the used condom properly, wrapping it in tissue and discarding it in the trash – never flush it down the toilet.

Remember, using condoms not only protects against unwanted pregnancies but also helps prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted infections. It's a simple yet effective way to prioritize your sexual health and that of your partner."

Directions to use a female condom:

"Using a female condom is empowering and offers women an active role in their sexual health. Begin by ensuring your hands are clean and dry. Open the package carefully, avoiding any tearing or damage. Find a comfortable position; you can either stand with one foot on a chair or lie down.

Hold the closed end of the condom and squeeze the inner ring with your thumb and middle finger, then insert it into the vagina. Use your index finger to push the inner ring as far as it will go, ensuring it rests against the cervix.

The outer ring should remain outside the body, covering the area around the vaginal opening. During intercourse, guide your partner's penis into the condom. After sex, twist the outer ring to prevent any spillage, gently pull it out, and dispose of it properly in the trash.

Female condoms provide an effective barrier against sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies, giving women control over their sexual health. Remember, communication with your partner is key, and practicing safe sex contributes to a healthier and more responsible approach to intimacy."
