World Liver Day – April 19, 2025
Theme: "Food is Medicine"
Why is Liver Day important?
The liver is a very important organ in our body . It helps us digest food, stores energy, and cleans harmful things (toxins) from our body.
World Liver Day reminds us to take care of our liver and stop liver problems before they start.
Example: Just like a water filter needs cleaning to work well, your liver also needs care to keep your body healthy.
Signs of liver problems:
Many liver problems don’t show symptoms in the beginning, but here are some signs to watch for:
Feeling very tired
Yellow eyes or skin (called jaundice)
No desire to eat
Dark pee
Itchy skin
Swollen belly or legs
Example: If someone is always tired and their eyes turn yellow, it’s time to visit the doctor.
How to keep your liver healthy:
Eat healthy food – less oil, sugar, and salt.
🍎 Eat fruits, veggies, and home-cooked meals.
Drink less alcohol – or stop completely.
🍺 Drinking too much can badly damage the liver.
Take vaccines – for Hepatitis A and B.
💉 These protect your liver from infections.
Don’t share needles or razors – it can spread liver infections.
Exercise every day – walking or any activity helps.
🚶 Just 30 minutes a day keeps your liver fit.
Be careful with medicines – don’t take too many or without advice.
Get regular health check-ups – especially if you're overweight or diabetic.
Stages of liver disease (step-by-step):
✅ Healthy Liver – Works well
🍔 Fatty Liver – Too much fat builds up
🔥 Hepatitis – Liver becomes swollen (can be from viruses or alcohol)
⚠️ Fibrosis – Some damage, scar tissue forms
❌ Cirrhosis – Liver is mostly damaged and scarred
🚨 Liver Failure or Cancer – Liver stops working; may need transplant
🧓 Example: Drinking alcohol for many years can cause cirrhosis.
