World Pneumonia Day 12 November 2023



This year, 2023, the World Pneumonia Day theme is

"Every Breath Counts: Stop Pneumonia in Its Track”.

The theme Highlights the significance of every breath, and underscores the urgency of stopping pneumonia through early detection, treatment, and prevention.


History of World Pneumonia Day


World Pneumonia Day was first observed on 12 November 2009, under the "Stop Pneumonia" initiatives by Global Coalition Against Child Pneumonia, a coalition of various institutions all together to fight the child mortality due to the respiratory infection. Stop Pneumonia got immense support across the globe, various Govt institutions and private organisation advocated and implemented the better policies and campaigns to educate people and provide better facilities especially in the low and middle income countries where children suffers with malnutrition and air infections.


Objectives of World Pneumonia Day:

Raise awareness about pneumonia, a leading cause of death among children globally.

Promote prevention, treatment, and vaccination efforts.

Advocate for increased access to healthcare resources.


Recognising Signs and Symptoms of Pneumonia:

Common signs and symptoms include:

Cough: Often producing phlegm.

Fever: High body temperature.

Shortness of Breath: Difficulty breathing.

Chest Pain: Sharp or stabbing pain when breathing or coughing.

Fatigue: Feeling unusually tired.

Confusion: Especially in older adults.


Four Stages of Pneumonia:

Incubation: Initial exposure to the bacteria or virus.

Consolidation: Inflammation and fluid build-up in the affected lung tissue.

Resolution: Body's immune response fights the infection.

Scar Formation: Tissue healing, which may lead to scarring.


Main Causes of Pneumonia:

Bacteria, Viruses, and Fungi: Infections from these microorganisms.

Inhalation of Irritants: Chemicals or aspirated food particles.


How to Avoid Pneumonia in Simple Language with Examples:


Vaccination: Ensure you and your family are up-to-date on pneumonia vaccines, like the pneumococcal vaccine. Example: Visit your doctor for recommended vaccinations.

Good Hygiene Practices: Wash hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs.Example: Wash your hands with soap and water before meals.

Healthy Lifestyle: Maintain a balanced diet and regular exercise to boost your immune system.

Example: Eat fruits, vegetables, and exercise regularly.

Avoid Smoking and Air Pollutants: These can weaken your lungs and make you more susceptible to infections. Example: Quit smoking for a healthier respiratory syste Prompt Medical Attention: Seek medical help if you experience symptoms to prevent complications. Example: See a doctor if you have a persistent cough and difficulty breathing.
